Welcome to Ray’s World; where “No” means “Maybe”, “Yes” is usually your next answer, and an argument with him is just another opportunity to see things Ray’s Way. As one of San Jos State’s most recognized alums (BA 1952 Applied Sciences & Arts; MA 1956 Applied Sciences & Arts; Spartan Varsity Basketball Team), you might be surprised to associate him with such “bulldog” determination but he comes by it honestly. In 2003, the San Jose High Academy Bulldog Foundation established a scholarship in his name as an honored alumnus. Once a bulldog, always a bulldog...west of the San Joaquin, that is.
Behind the firm handshake and direct approach, you’ll find a passion for “the deal”. To the great benefit of Sparta, Ray’s favorite deals usually involve the Spartan Foundation. As its past president as well as past president of the Alumni Association and the University Foundation Ray harbors a relentless passion for all things Spartan. He’s a walking encyclopedia of Spartan sports history (being involved in over 50 years of it) and a fixture at Spartan games and events.
Ray’s professional affiliations and honors as well as personal accomplishments are far too numerous to mention (...which is sure to chafe this consummate fund-raiser who, when asked to relate the three most important rewards for a philanthropist, once replied: “Recognition, recognition, recognition”).
You can kid Ray about his personal passion and zealous approach, but you can’t question his integrity. He won’t ask you to do it if he hasn’t already done it himself. Personally and professionally he follows his golden rule: “...I shall, in the light of all circumstances, recommend that course of action or provide that service, which, had I been in the same circumstances, I would have applied to myself.”
The glorious outcome of Ray’s philosophy and determination is his amazing ability to raise money to support our deserving student-athletes.
