Kaia Hedlund named interim director of athletic compliance

Kaia Hedlund, who has served as an athletics compliance officer at the University of Hawaii and UC Irvine, has accepted the position of interim director of athletic compliance at San Jose State University.

Kaia Hedlund, who has served as an athletics compliance officer at the University of Hawaii and UC Irvine, has accepted the position of interim director of athletic compliance at San Jose State University.

Hedlund, currently a member of the Big West Conference office staff in Irvine, Calif., will retain her duties at the conference office in addition to working at San Jose State University. With the Big West Conference, she is responsible for the Game Management Handbook and also assists with marketing of the league’s basketball tournament.

While at the University of Hawaii, she was the assistant athletics director for student services. She oversaw the academics, sports medicine, and athletic equipment departments and was the rules compliance coordinator for the university.

Prior to her stint with Hawaii, Hedlund was the Senior Woman Administrator at UC Irvine (1983-90). She worked as the compliance coordinator at the University and also coordinated academic counseling, tutorial assistance, and job placement for Intercollegiate Athletics. Hedlund also served as the Women’s Swimming coach at UCI from 1980-84.

Besides her duties at San Jose State and the Big West Conference, Hedlund is the chair of the NCAA Women’s Water Polo Committee and is a member of the NCAA Financial Aid and Amateurism Committee. She has also been the chair of the NCAA Men’s Water Polo Committee and NCAA Two-Year College Relations Committee.

Hedlund is a 1977 graduate of USC, where she competed for four seasons with the Women of Troy swim teams. She received her Master's of Science degree from Cal State Fullerton in 1986.
