California State University Chancellor Charles B. Reed appointed Don W. Kassing as interim president of San Jose State University on Wednesday, September 15. Kassing, who has been serving as the university’s acting president for the past month, previously was the university’s vice president for administration and finance.
Kassing has been with SJSU since 1993, and has a total of 25 years of experience in higher education in Illinois, Kentucky, Colorado and California. He holds a bachelor’s degree and a master of business administration from St. Louis University.
It is expected that Kassing will serve in the interim position until the new president arrives on the campus. His salary, which will be confirmed by the California State University Board of Trustees, will be $230,004, and he will be provided with a university-leased condominium during his presidency.
The California State University Board of Trustees will initiate a search for a permanent president during the 2005/06 academic year. Kassing’s interim term will end when the new president arrives on the campus.
