Koret Athletic Training Center Groundbreaking Set
San Jose, Calif. - Groundbreaking for The Koret Athletic Training Center, one of the most significant capital campaign projects undertaken by the San Jose State University Division of Intercollegiate Athletics, is set for Monday, March 19.
Ceremonies begin at 8:30 a.m. on a grassy area just north of Spartan Stadium and the Simpkins Stadium Center located on Seventh Street between Humboldt and Alma. Presently, the San Jose State University football team uses the area for practices.
The 17,000 square-foot Koret Athletic Training Center will service the school's 16-sport, 400-student-athlete population with weight training facilities, a rehabilitation and training room area and locker facilities.
The latest addition to the school's intercollegiate athletics facilities was made possible by a $1-million leadership gift from the Koret Foundation, a contributor to and major supporter of programs and facilities at Bay Area colleges and universities for a number of years. Created by Joseph and Stephanie Koret in 1979, the Foundation has awarded more than $200-million in grants to support community projects, educational institutions and organizations active in public policy, arts and culture, and programs for disadvantaged youth and elderly citizens in the Bay Area and in Israel.
"Athletic programs which complement the mission of major universities have become indispensable elements in university educational endeavors," said Tad Taube, Board President of the Koret Foundation.
"No university athletic facility is used as frequently or as extensively by student-athletes as a strength, conditioning and rehab center," said San Jose State University Director of Athletics Chuck Bell. "We are delighted that the Koret Foundation has moved us a giant step forward in upgrading this important part of our athletic facilities."
With the leadership gift and led by Capital Projects Campaign committee chairman, Chuck Davidson, more than $3-million was raised to construct the Koret Athletic Training Center.
University administrators led by President Robert L. Caret and athletics director Bell will participate with the Koret Foundation's Taube and Davidson and other dignitaries in the groundbreaking ceremonies.
Parking for those attending will be available in the Park & Ride Lot located on Seventh Street across from Spartan Stadium.
