Broken Arrow, Okla. -- Tying for the third best team score of the final
round, the San Jose State University men's golf team finished in eighth
place at the 2001 Western Athletic Conference Championships.
The Spartans recorded a 308 team score on the windy, par 72,
6,834-yard Forest Ridge Golf Course. Nevada matched that score and only
team champion TCU with a 305 and SMU with a 304 were better during
Wednesday's final round.
San Jose State finished with a 54-hole total of 925. TCU edged host Tulsa
for top honors with an 896 to Tulsa's 897. SMU was third in the nine-team
field with a 905.
Tulsa freshman David Inglis captured individual honors with an even par
216. Scott Volpitto of TCU, who was tied with Inglis heading into the final
round, was second at 218. The 30-mile-an-hour winds sent scores soaring.
SMU's Stephen Sparolini had Wednesday's best score and he could only match
par. 24 of the 45 players failed to shoot under 80.
Spartan freshman Bryant Reyes was the top San Jose State finisher tying for
ninth at 227. Reyes' finish matches the best placing by a Spartan men's
