Men's golf finishes second at Anteater Invitational

Calimesa, Calif.-----Posting its best finish of the spring season, San Jose State University finished second in a 14-team field at the Anteater Invitational men’s golf tournament.

The Spartans, who started the final round four shots behind eventual winner St. John’s, was unable to make up any ground on the Red Storm during Tuesday’s final round. San Jose State finished with an 888 compared to St. John’s 884 on the par 72, Southern California PGA Champions course. Host UC Irvine was third at 889.

"We beat all the teams we needed to beat – Long Beach, UC Irvine and UC Riverside; so that’s good," said associate head coach John Dormann. "Everyone counted a good round or two. Everyone fought hard. It’s a step in the right direction. I hope we can keep it together going into the Western (Intercollegiate)."

Bryant Reyes posted the best score for the Spartans in the final round with a two-over par 74. Only two players in the 75-man field were able to match par.

Santa Clara’s Matt Klentz won a six-man playoff after finishing 54 holes with a two-over par 218. John Witherall was the top Spartan finisher tying for seventh place at 219. Isaac Weintraub, 12th at 222, and Steve Bendt, 14th at 224, also finished in the top-20.
