San Jose, Calif.-----Sophomore Isaac Weintraub shot a five-under par 67 during Tuesday’s final round to capture individual honors and lead San Jose State University to victory in the Santa Clara Invitational men’s golf tournament.
Weintraub’s 67 was the low score by any of the 63 players in the 54-hole tournament held at the par 72, 6,868-yard Silver Creek Valley Country Club. He had five birdies and no bogeys and finished the round with four birdies over the final seven holes. His 213 total was two shots better than Brent Jensen of Saint Mary’s and Dan Warburton of CS Bakersfield.
"Isaac showed tremendous patience today. He played the way he is capable of playing," said San Jose State assistant coach John Dormann of the Spartan sophomore. "I look for him to continue playing this way the rest of the year."
Weintraub, John Witherall, who was seventh, and Steve Bendt, who tied for eighth, finished in the top-10 as the Spartans picked up their first team title of the season. With its first under-par round score of the year, a two-under 286 in Monday’s morning round, San Jose State never relinquished the lead in the team standings. The Spartans finished with an 872 score, 17 shots better than CS Bakersfield.
"After years of rebuilding, it’s finally starting to happen. We never had to count a bad score and we had under par rounds from three different players," added Dormann, who also watched Bendt and Witherall post a 70 and 71, respectively, Monday morning. "We played smart and safe and it all came together this week."
San Jose State returns to action Friday, November 8, at the Long Beach State Invitational.
