Making progress each season in a San Jose State uniform, Mike is battling
for a starting role as a defensive tackle. Beams is the only returning
defensive tackle among the top four defensive tackles from the 2001 season.
He was credited with 16 tackles and two tackles for loss in his reserve
role. In 2001, Mike had at least one tackle in 10 of the 12 games including
a season-high three stops in the Tulsa victory. The third-year Spartan
redshirted the 2000 season after playing two seasons at Western State
College in Gunnison, Colorado.
Beams is a graduate of Agoura (Calif.) High School. He lettered in football
(Coach Charlie Weager), wrestling and track and field. During his prep
football career, he was a first team all-league, all-county and All-C.I.F.
choice. He enjoys snow skiing in the winter and body surfing in the summer
months. Mike was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, on October 27, 1979.
