Oregon Wins Western Intercollegiate Men's Golf Tourney; San Diego State's Johansson Wins Playoff

Santa Cruz, Calif. (April 3) - Mike Sica and John Ellis each shot a
final-round, one-under par 69 to lead the University of Oregon to the
team championship of the 55th annual Western Intercollegiate men's golf tournament.

The Ducks had their best team score in an 18-hole round of the tournament Tuesday
with a one-under par 279 for an 850 total on the par 70, 6,445 yard Pasatiempo Golf
Course. Oregon, which shared the first round lead and was ahead by six shots after round
two, picked up its first win of the season. Washington was second, 17 shots behind Oregon,
at 867. Kansas, which had the best team score in the final round with a three-under par
277, finished third at 872.

Pacific at 876 and California at 877 rounded out the top five teams in the 18-team
field.

Other local teams included Stanford tying for seventh place at 882; San Jose State,
tied for tenth at 885; and Santa Clara, 18th at 919.

Individually, Lars Johansson of San Diego State parred the first playoff hole to
capture medalist honors over Jason Higton of Pacific, who bogeyed the hole. Both players
finished at four-under par 206 after Johansson shot a final round 74 while Higton posted
an even par 70.

No other player in the 90-player field broke par. Ellis, a sophomore from Gavilan
College in Gilroy, and his Oregon teammate, Chris Carnahan tied for third at even par 210.
Overall, three Oregon golfers finished in the top-14.

The top San Jose State finishers were Isaac Weintraub and John Witherall who tied
for 22nd at 219.
