A two-year letterman at San Jos State (1996-97), Berns was a second-team all-conference selection both seasons as a first baseman. He led the 1997 team with a .399 average, 93 hits, 29 doubles, 14 home runs, 81 RBIs and 72 runs scored.
As a junior, Berns led the team with nine home runs and 44 RBIs. He also appeared in six games as a relief pitcher and recorded one save. Berns was named the team’s MVP both seasons.
He holds the school’s single season records for hits and doubles, and he is San Jos State’s career record holder for batting average, home runs and RBIs, and is second in doubles.
Berns transferred to San Jos State after playing two seasons and redshirting one at Cal State University Los Angeles. He posted a 4-2 record with a 4.86 ERA as a freshman and had a team-best 3.69 ERA while posting a 5-5 record his sophomore season.
Following his collegiate career, Berns signed a professional contract with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. He played three seasons in the Devil Rays organization. He holds the team records for doubles (34) and extra base hits (44) in a season for the Princeton (W. Va.) Devil Rays.
Berns graduated with a degree in criminal justice administration from San Jos State in May 2001.
