Rogelstad Pitches Eight Scoreless Innings in Baseball's Season Opening Win Against St. Mary's

SAN JOSE, Calif. Senior Jeremy Rogelstad pitched eight scoreless innings in the San Jose State University baseball team's 9-1 win against St. Mary's College at Municipal Stadium Friday afternoon. The game was the season opener for both schools.

SAN JOSE, Calif.— Senior Jeremy Rogelstad pitched eight scoreless innings in the San Jose State University baseball team’s 9-1 win against St. Mary’s College at Municipal Stadium Friday afternoon. The game was the season opener for both schools.

The Spartans (1-0) broke through two big innings, scoring three runs in the fifth and four runs in the seventh. Rogelstad received the win for the Spartans allowing four hits, one walk and striking out three and never allowing more than one runner on base each inning. For St. Mary’s (0-1), senior Mike Byer took the loss giving up seven runs (six earned) on eight hits with four walks and five strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings pitched.

Center fielder Dino Quintero provided a fair share of the Spartan offense going 2-for-3 at the plate with a double, one stolen base, one walk and scored two runs. Designated hitter Kevin Frandsen (2-3, 1 R, HBP) and also had two hits and third baseman Hector Zamora scored two RBI on one hit (1-3, 2 RBI, 1 K, HBP). In his first at bat as a Spartan, Bryan Baker hit a two out, two run pinch-hit homerun in the eighth inning to score the last two Spartan runs.

Two back-to-back walks to Quintero and left fielder Kayzell Milton started the Spartans’ three-run fifth inning. Second Baseman Gabe Lopez singled to left to score Quintero for the team’s first run of the game. Frandsen singled to load the bases for shortstop Ryan Adams who hit into a fielder’s choice. Milton scored and Lopez scored on a throwing error by the Gaels’ Mike Harris.

The Spartans added to their lead with four runs in the seventh. Quintero led with a double to right and later scored on Milton’s single to center. A walk and a hit batsman would load the bases for catcher Adam Shorsher who drew a walk to score one run. Zamora then batted in two more runs to give the Spartans a seven run lead.

The Gaels were able to get just four hits until the ninth inning when they scored their only run off the Spartans’ Casey Minister. Third baseman Mark Teahen led off the inning with a single and advanced to third on center fielder Jason Waugh’s double down the left field line. Teahan was able to score when first baseman Brian Houle grounded out to the third baseman.

The Spartans will travel to St. Mary’s for a 1:00 p.m. game on Saturday, the second of the three game series. The series finale is at Blethen Field on Sunday in San Jose with a 1:00 p.m. start time.
