San Jose State Takes Part In Olympic Flag Raising
San Jose State will serve as the processing center for the U.S. Olympic Team.
The City of San Jos, San Jos State University and the San Jose Sports Authority celebrated their support for the 2008 Olympics Tuesday, June 24, on the San Jos City Hall plaza. Officials raised a U.S. Olympic Team flag and proclaimed the opening of "Olympic Summer" in San Jos. Athletics Director Tom Bowen joined Mayor Chuck Reed, San Jos State Vice President for Student Affairs Veril Phillips and several former Olympians including San Jos State's own Yosh Uchida,the coach who played a pivotal role in making judo an Olympic sport, and Mike Swain, a Spartan alumn, and four-time Olympian.
San Jose State will be represented by at least one Olympian in Beijing as assistant softball coach Vicky Galindo goes for Gold with USA Softball.
"Thanks to another partnership between the City and the University, Olympic dreams will begin right here at San Jose State," Bowen said.
San Jose State will be the site for team processing for the 2008 Olympics. More than 600 U.S. Olympic Team members, coaches and officials will gather by teams at the university during late July and early August 2008. Athletes will participate in team briefings, apparel distribution, medical screenings and training before departing for Beijing, where one of the most important Olympic Games in recent history will be held Aug. 8-24, 2008.
