Sandra Bacher - 2010 San Jose State Sports Hall Of Fame Inductee
Sandra Bacher was a world champion wrestler and three-time Olympian in judo.
San Jose, Calif.----- Sandra Bacher, a judo star who became one of America's first outstanding women's amateur wrestlers, is one of seven 2010 inductees into the San Jose State University Sports Hall of Fame.
Bacher (Judo,1990-93), a transfer from the University of Washington, was a four-time National Collegiate Judo Association champion for San Jose State from 1990 through 1993. The Long Island, New York native was a 14-time national champion in judo from 1992 through 2004.
She represented the United States in judo at the 1992, 1996 and 2000 Olympics. While winning major judo championships regularly in the 1990's, Bacher also competed in women's freestyle wrestling. At the World Championships, she was a bronze medalist in 1997, a silver medalist in 1998 and the 1999 World Champion at 68 kg.
The 2010 Hall of Fame class joins more than 350 Spartans from 100-plus years of athletics competition who have excelled in their sports at the collegiate and/or professional levels.
Induction ceremonies take place, Friday, September 17, at the Barrett Ballroom in the Student Union on the San Jose State campus. The inductees will be honored at the Spartans' football home opener against Southern Utah on September 18 in Spartan Stadium.
