SJSU Top Scholar Athletes Announced
Three San Jose State student-athletes have been honored as the 2000 Top Scholar Athletes - Dan Fife, Caroline Stenman and Mariko Yoshihara.
Fife played on the men's soccer team. He is a kinesiology major with a minor in business and has a 3.83 grade point average. Fife was named to the MPSF all-academic team and the second team MPSF Mountain Division. A senior forward from Merced, Calif., he started in 21 games this season and scored four goals, including three game-winning goals, and had one assist.
Stenman is a member of the Spartan women's tennis team. She has a 3.94 gpa in political science.
Yoshihara plays on the women's soccer team. She has a 3.94 gpa in psychology. Yoshihara played in six games and started once this past season. She had one assist, against Nevada on Oct. 1.
For the first time in school history, a male and female scholar athlete were announced, in part because of the generosity of the Spartan Bookstore.
The 2000 team award went to women's golf who had an overall cumulative grade point average of 3.54 in the spring semester and a 3.34 in the fall semester.
Overall, 71 were recognized as scholar athletes, with 16 of those being named Dean Scholars. 47 student-athletes were named WAC Scholar Athletes. In addition, 34 student-athletes received Honor Roll recognition for achieving a 3.0 cumulative grade point average in his or her first semester at San Jose State.
All San Jose State Scholar Athletes and Honor Roll students were honored by university faculty, staff and administration on April , at the annual Arm & Pat Hanzad Scholar Athlete Award Ceremony.
