SJSU's Lopez Named To WAC All-Conference Team

San Jose State University second baseman Gabe Lopez was named to the
Western Athletic Conference all-league first team, announced today by the
conference office in Denver, Colo. Second-team honors went to Junior Ruiz
and Chris Sherman.


Lopez, a junior from Pico Rivera, Calif. who transfered to San Jose State
from Cerritos College, hit .353 during the season. He led the team with 91
hits and 62 runs, tied for the team lead with three triples, was second
with 18 doubles and 14 stolen bases and had 40 RBI while hitting from the
leadoff position. He tied the single season record with 258 at bats and is
third for hits in a season. Lopez was twice named the WAC Player of the
Week.


Ruiz, a junior from Union City, Calif. (Logan HS), was the starting left
fielder or designated hitter in 58 games this season. He led the team with
a .374 batting average, finished second with 77 hits, and drew a team-high
42 walks. He stole 23 bases, which also led the team. Ruiz set three career
records during the season - hits (237), runs (149), walks (191) - set a
record by reaching base safely on 11 straight trips to the plate, and tied
a single game record with four stolen bases. Ruiz was a first-team
all-league pick and was named the WAC "Player of the Year" last season.


Sherman led the Spartans with nine wins and 107.1 innings pitched. He was
second on the team in starts (18), complete games (four), was third in
strikeouts with 69 and was second on the team with a 3.10 ERA. He also tied
for the team lead with two shutouts.
