A recent dinner in Washington, DC brought San Jose State alumni and friends from the national capitol area together with university President Don Kassing, Athletic Director Tom Bowen, CSU Chancellor Dr. Charles Reed and CSU Trustee (and San Jose State alum) Bill Hauck.

Among the guests -- and someone who spoke enthusiastically about all that San Jose State means to him -- was Al Saunders (’69), now Associate Head Coach (Offense) of the Washington Redskins. Al, who played wide receiver and safety for the Spartans in the late 1960s, was an Academic All-American; he also sports a Super Bowl ring from his time as an assistant coach with the St. Louis Rams.

Tom Bowen spoke to the group about the changes made in Spartan athletics in the past three years, including the significant progress made in competition and in the classroom, and about the “Culture of Champions” that he and the entire athletic program are devoted to establishing at San Jose State.

The dinner was organized and hosted by San Jose State alum and now Washington, DC resident, Les Francis (’65).
