Spartan Athletics Announces Restructure
Director of Athletics Tom Bowen has announced a departmental restructure.
In the continuing growth of a talented department, Director of Athletics Tom Bowen has announced a restructuring of responsibilities and assignments as San JoseState continues to advance Bowen’s Culture of Champions vision.
The restructure encompasses a matrix management style of leadership, allowing for greater intra-departmental mobility and efficiency.
Kellie Elliott has been promoted to Deputy Director of Athletics from her former position as Senior Associate. In her expanded role, Elliott will serve as the chief operating officer of the department, coordinating the daily administrative operations with oversight in multiple areas.
The Stanford alumna supervises nine Spartan teams, with special emphasis on men’s and women’s basketball and a key financial role with football; oversees business and finance, student services, facilities, strength and conditioning, sports medicine and is the department point person for all human resources matters. As the Senior Women’s Administrator, Elliott ensures the department’s compliance within Title IX as well.
Elevated to Senior Associate Athletics Director for Development and Donor Relations, Vince Otoupal now oversees all aspects of San Jose State Athletics’ revenue generation opportunities: corporate sales, fund-raising, ticket sales, and development efforts for the department.
Tom Hastings, Associate Athletics Director for Media Services, has assumed the title of Associate Athletics Director for Communications. Hastings has added the role of sports supervisor for the Spartan Aquatics teams: Women’s Water Polo and Swimming and Diving. He has also recently been named to oversee of the Marketing & Promotions efforts for Athletics.
Assistant Athletics Director Ken McDonald has expanded his role to include Executive Director of the Spartan Foundation to his duties. McDonald has been instrumental in the growth of the Spartan Donor base, particularly the Blazer Brigade, which recognizes donors at the $2,500 level and above. The Brigade has grown from 42 to 137 with McDonald’s assistance.
In a continuing effort to strengthen the department’s academic success and service to student-athlete’s, Eileen Daley has been named Assistant Athletic Director for Academic Services. Daley has served as Athletic Academic Advisor since 2005 after serving in similar capacities at San FranciscoStateUniversity and the California Interscholastic Federation.
“These promotions reflect the hard work and dedication of each individual and are in the best interest in the growth of our department,” Bowen said.
