SAN JOSE, Calif.— The San Jose State University baseball team swept Saint Mary’s College this weekend with a 6-4 win in the final game of the three game series Sunday afternoon at Blethen Field.

The Spartans (3-0) used a three-run fourth inning, which included a two-run triple by senior Gabe Lopez, to take a 5-1 lead. In the second, junior Bryan Baker scored the first run of the game with his second homerun of the season.

Senior Don Gemmell, a transfer from CSU Stanislaus, recorded the win in his first appearance as a Spartan. Gemmell pitched five innings allowing just one run on five hits and six strikeouts. Senior Jahseam George got the save after pitching a scoreless ninth inning. Eric Bowden was the losing pitcher despite pitching seven strong innings with eight hits and five runs.

"This was a hard fought game and they (Saint Mary’s) made the adjustments to make it a close game," said Spartan head coach Sam Piraro. "I never expected them to just lay down when we had a 5-1 lead and they came back to prove it."

The Gaels were able to score three runs off the freshman Matt Durkin in the seventh inning to come within a run of the Spartans. San Jose State added an insurance run in the eighth and looked to George to retire the side.

The Spartans will play at California on Wednesday, February 6 at 2:00 p.m. The game will be broadcasted on KSJS (90.5 FM).
