Spartan Olympics Moment - Harry Campbell, Sr.

With the start of boxing at the Beijing Olympics, today's Olympic moment takes a look at Harry Campbell, Sr.

Lightweight boxing is underway in Beijing. Back in 1960, San Jose State had two representatives on the U.S. Olympic boxing team that traveled to Rome.

Julie Menendez, who directed the Spartans to their third consecutive NCAA Championship earlier in the year, was the head coach.

Harry Campbell, Sr., was the U.S. entry at 132 pounds. Campbell, Sr., was a member of the 1958 and 1959 San Jose State boxing teams.

The 1960 team was one of the country's most successful boxing contingents in Olympic competition. They won four Olympic medals, three gold and one bronze. Gold medalists  were Eddie Crook, Jr., Wilbert McClure, and a rising star, Cassius Clay, who is better known now as Muhammad Ali.

Campbell made his way to the quarterfinals.

Harry Campbell, Sr., preceded his son, Harry Campbell, Jr., into athletics competition at San Jose State. His son, Harry Campbell, Jr., was a top-notch quarter-miler on the San Jose State track and field teams of the early 1980's.
