SAN JOSE - In a must-win situation to keep its postseason hopes alive, the
San Jose State baseball team ended the regular season with a 7-3 Western
Athletic Conference win over Fresno State Sunday at Municipal Stadium.

The Spartans finished in a tie for third place in the conference standings
with TCU with a 21-15 WAC record, 37-22-1 overall.

Fresno State threatened from the outset, loading the bases in the top of
the first with no outs on two hits and an error. But the Spartans turned a
5-2-3 double play and got an infield groundout to end the inning. The
Bulldogs also had a runner on second with two outs in the second and loaded
the bases with two outs in the third but did not score in either inning.
Fresno State stranded 12 runners during the game.

San Jose State also loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of an
inning, with Gabe Lopez and Kevin Frandsen both reaching on errors and
Junior Ruiz drawing a walk. Brandon Macchi drove in Lopez with a sacrifice
fly and Frandsen scored on Ryan Adams' ground out.

Jamie Hiegel doubled with one out in the fourth and scored on another error
to give the Spartans a 3-0 advantage.

Fresno State rallied in the fifth, scoring two runs on an error and three
straight singles. Ryan Brucker's home run with one out in the sixth gave
the Spartans a 4-2 lead.

The Bulldogs answered in the seventh, with Brad Harper drawing a leadoff
walk and later scoring on Tobey Riday-White's single. Fresno State had
runners on second and third with one out, but Spartan reliever Andy Cook
got two straight outs to end the inning.

San Jose State iced the win with three in the eighth. Adam Shorsher reached
second on an error and scored on Jamie Hiegel's single. He went to second
on Brucker's sacrifice bunt and scored on a triple by Lopez. Lopez scored
the final Spartan run on Kevin Frandsen's sacrifice fly.

Cook, who pitched 2 2/3 innings, was the winning pitcher. He is 4-1 on the
season. Fresno State starter Zach Minor (7-5) took the loss.

The Spartans will learn Monday if they will be selected for their second
straight postseason berth. The NCAA selection show will be televised on
ESPN beginning at 12:00 noon (Pacific Time).
