SPARTANS VS. CAL
The Cal Golden Bears lead the all-time series with San Jose State, 34-79-3. The first time the team’s faced each other was back in 1933 when Cal shutout the Spartans, 7-0. The teams have split the last 10 games played with Cal winning both games last season. Cal won the first game on February 27 at home, 5-3, and then took the second game at San Jose State, 9-7, on April 10. Before meeting twice in the 2001 season, the last time the team’s met was in 1997, when the Spartans won 18-8.

SPARTANS VS. CAL POLY
The Spartans have a 43-26-1 all-time record against Cal Poly. The series began in 1926 with Cal Poly winning the first game, 7-6. The Spartans won both games played last year and have a 7-3 advantage in the last 10 games. The Spartans took the first game 14-4 on April 23 in San Jose and a close 9-8 win in San Luis Obispo on May 15.

SPARTAN RADIO
KSJS (90.5 FM) kicks off the 2002 baseball broadcast schedule against Cal on Wednesday, February 6. KSJS will broadcast a majority of the Spartan baseball team’s road games and a selection of home games during the 2002 season. Michael Thomas, sports director at KSJS, returns for his third season broadcasting Spartan baseball. This is his first season as the primary play-by-play voice for the Spartans. Thomas, a senior in broadcast journalism has experience with other Spartan sports including football, volleyball and men’s soccer.

ROGELSTAD NAMED THE FIRST WAC PITCHER OF THE WEEK OF 2002
After pitching eight shutout innings in the Spartans season opening 9-1 victory against Saint Mary’s, Jeremy Rogelstad was named WAC "Pitcher of the Week" for the week of Jan. 28 to Feb. 3. Rogelstad, a senior right-hander from Benicia, Calif. (Benicia HS), gave up four hits, one walk and struck out three while not allowing more than one base runner in any inning.

SPARTANS SWEEP SAINT MARY’S IN SESON OPENING SERIES
The Spartans completed a sweep of Saint Mary’s College this weekend with a 6-4 win in the final game of the three game series Sunday afternoon at Blethen Field. The Spartans (3-0) used a three-run fourth inning, which included a two-run triple by senior Gabe Lopez, to take a 5-1 lead. In the second, junior Bryan Baker scored the first run of the game with his second homerun of the season. Senior Don Gemmell, a transfer from CSU Stanislaus, recorded the win in his first appearance as a Spartan. Gemmell pitched five innings allowing just one run on five hits and six strikeouts. Senior Jahseam George got the save after pitching a scoreless ninth inning.

A nine-run second inning helped the team win, 13-5, as the series shifted to Moraga, Calif. at Louis Guisto Field Saturday afternoon. The Spartans hit three consecutive doubles with one out in the inning to take a 9-0 lead early in the game. The Gaels sophomore pitcher Kevin Trochez gave up six runs on six hits and lasted only 1 1/3 innings before being pulled. Senior center fielder Dino Quintero led the Spartan offense going 2-for-4 at the plate, with two walks and three RBI including a two run double in the second. Junior Mike Malott pitched five innings and earned his first win of the season allowing four runs on seven hits, one walk and two strikeouts.

Jeremy Rogelstad pitched eight scoreless innings in the 9-1 win in the season and series opener at Municipal Stadium Friday afternoon. The Spartans broke through two big innings, scoring three runs in the fifth and four runs in the seventh. Rogelstad received the win for the Spartans allowing four hits, one walk and striking out three and never allowing more than one runner on base each inning. Center fielder Dino Quintero provided a fair share of the Spartan offense going 2-for-3 at the plate with a double, one stolen base, one walk and scored two runs. Designated hitter Kevin Frandsen (2-3, 1 R, HBP) and also had two hits and third baseman Hector Zamora scored two RBI on one hit (1-3, 2 RBI, 1 K, HBP). In his first at bat as a Spartan, Bryan Baker hit a two-out, two-run pinch-hit homerun in the eighth inning to score the last two Spartan runs.

WELCOME TO THE SPARTANS
Several Spartan newcomers had impressive first appearances this past weekend. Junior first baseman Bryan Baker got his first hit and first RBI in the same swing. Pinch hitting in the eighth, Baker hit a towering home run to left-center. CSU Stanislaus transfer Don Gemmell won in his first start with San Jose State. Gemmell, a senior right-hander, pitched five innings allowing only one run on five hits while striking out six. Designated hitter and infielder, Jordan Bergstrom went 5-for-10 with three doubles in his opening series. Freshman pitcher Matt Durkin showed some promise after retiring the first four batters he faced in order including three strikeouts.

WESTERN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE BASEBALL GETS ROLLING
The 40th season of Western Athletic Conference baseball got underway on Jan. 30 when Hawai‘i hosted Florida State in a four-game series. Four of the other five teams played their first games last weekend, while Rice opens its season Feb. 7 in the Astros College Classic. Hawai‘i new coach, Mike Trapasso, got his first win in the team’s 3-2 opening win against the No. 2 ranked Seminoles.

Fresno State Fresno State dropped the final two games against Santa Clara after taking the first game. The Bulldogs had to come back from a 5-0 deficit to defeat Santa Clara 8-5. After that, the Broncos pitching dominated the next two games holding the Bulldogs to four and one runs, in games two and three, respectively.

Nevada defeated the Pepperdine Waves, 6-2 Sunday afternoon in Malibu, Calif. After dropping the first game on the series on Friday, 2-0 the Wolf Pack came back to claim victories on Saturday, 7-1 and Sunday, 6-2 to win the series 2-1.

WAC newcomer Lousiana Tech was the only other WAC team to sweep its opening series with a 13-0 shutout on Sunday at J.C. Love Field. The Bulldogs used five home runs and an effective pitching performance by Adam Kirkendall to roll past the Delta Devils (0-3) on Sunday. Cullen Simmons paced the offense by tying a career-high with six RBIs by going 3 for 4 with one home run and a double. The Bulldogs opened the 2002 season with a doubleheader sweep Saturday by scores of 6-2 and 16-6.
