Scott Sobczak tossed a six-hit complete game in the first start of his major college career to lead San Jose State to a 9-1 victory over Hawai’i in the opener of a three-game Western Athletic Conference baseball series at Les Murakami Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii, on Friday, March 30.

Sobczak (3-1), a first-year sophomore transfer out of Skyline College, had been the Spartan closer to this point in the season, with five saves. He allowed just six hits and a ninth-inning run while striking out a career-high six and facing just four batters over the minimum. It was the first complete game by a Spartan pitcher this season, and the first since Branden Dewing’s effort against Fresno State at the 2006 WAC Tournament in Fresno, Calif.

After his team staked him to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, Sobczak allowed a two-out double in the bottom half of the frame, but managed to get out of his first inning with a flyout. He had struck out the first batter he faced. Going for the shutout in the ninth, Sobczak gave up a leadoff double to snap a string of 12 straight retired batters since the start of the fifth, and subsequently an RBI single. Sobczak got a fielder's choice and a 6-4-3 double play to end the game.

Earlier, Sobczak set down eight straight Rainbow batters ahead of back-to-back two-out singles in the fourth. The threat was ended by a pick-off play at first base, with senior Spartan catcher Justin Santich-Hughes making the throw.
