Brittany McConnell has been named the Spartan Foundation Student-Athlete of the Week for her performances last week for the San Jose State softball team.
McConnell set or tied four San Jose State school records and broke one Western Athletic Conference record in the first game against New Mexico State last Saturday. She hit two home runs in the game to tie the single-game record of two, which is the third time in her career and second time this season she has accomplished this feat.
With the two home runs, McConnell also set the San Jose State single season home run record with 12. She passed Kara Kanney who blasted 11 in 2000. McConnell enters the week with 24 career home runs, just three shy of Kanney’s career mark of 27 set from 1996 to 2000.
McConnell also set the San Jose State and WAC single game RBI record as she drove in eight runs in the game including four when she blasted a grand slam in the second inning. McConnell broke her own school record of six and the WAC record of seven.
With the eight RBI, McConnell also broke the Spartan single season record and enters play this week with 45. She broke the record held by Victoria Ruelas who recorded 42 RBI in 1997.
San Jose State returns home this weekend for three games against Nevada on Friday and Saturday afternoon at SJSU Field.
