Brie Marhenke has been named the Spartan Foundation Student-Athlete of the Week for her performance last week for the San Jose State women’s swim team.

Marhenke led San Jose State to its first known dual meet victory over the University of the Pacific in program history this past Saturday, December 8, on the road in Stockton, Calif. Down by eight points heading into the day's final event, the 200 freestyle relay, the Spartans pulled out a dramatic one-point victory, 131-130.

Marhenke hit the water a little over a second behind as San Jose State's third swimmer on its 'A' freestyle relay after freshmen Daphne Yeung and Julie Wynn, but raced to a 22.74 split to her Pacific counterpart's 24.05 to take a slim lead. Junior teammate Tarolyn Robertson held on with a 25.09 anchor as the Spartans won in 1:38.29, with Pacific's 'A' relay timing 1:38.45. Meanwhile, the Spartan 'B' relay swam 1:39.17 to easily outdistance the remainder of the opposition for the two crucial points for third place.

The native of Carmichael, Calif., anchored the second-place 200 medley relay (1:48.40) with a 50 freestyle leg of 23.32 to begin the meet. She then remained undefeated on the season in dual meets in both sprint freestyle events, winning the 50 free (23.76) and 100 free (52.69), the latter by over a second over junior teammate Lauren Mar (53.76). She was the lone double winner in individual events on the day for San Jose State, with Pacific's Ja'Neil Bragg the only other double winner in the meet. Marhenke thus improved to a perfect 8-0 on the year in each event. For her two-year Spartan career, she is now an undefeated 20-0 in the 50 in duals, and 17-1 in the 100.

With the victory, San Jose State moved its dual meet record above the .500 mark to 5-4 on the season while closing out competition for the 2007 calendar year.
