Sobczak won his third decision in as many starts to begin the 2009 season. He helped lead the Spartans to a series victory at Cal State Northridge this past weekend.
In the 6-1 Spartan victory on Sunday, March 15, the senior right-hander went 7.0 innings, allowing just a seventh-inning run on six singles and a walk. He struck out five on the day, four coming on called third strikes.
Sobczak retired the first seven batters in a row prior to an infield hit. He ended each of the first two frames, as well as the fourth, with strikeouts looking. Sobczak induced four double plays, a season high for the Spartans, getting them to end the third and fifth innings, with two others coming in the fourth and seventh. He started the first double play himself, fielding a comebacker with runners at first and second in a 4-0 ballgame, and throwing to shortstop Kyle Bellows at second, who stepped on the bag and fired to first to end the threat.
San Jose State is now 10-3 on the season and plays six home games this week. The team hosts Chicago State for a single game on Tuesday, followed by a doubleheader on Wednesday. The Spartans face Dartmouth on Thursday and Friday and Fresno Pacific on Sunday.
