Marcus McKimmy started all four Spartan games last week and helped the baseball team to clinch a berth to the 2007 WAC Baseball Tournament, May 24-27, in Reno, Nev.  He started in the leadoff position for the first time all year at New Mexico State on Friday, and stayed in that position for all three games as the Spartans swept the critical series to lock up the tournament berth.
 
After going 0-for-2 with a walk in a 7-6 loss in 11 innings at California in the Spartans’ non-conference finale on Tuesday, May 8, McKimmy was 2-for-4 with his 11th double, fifth sacrifice hit and two runs scored in an 8-5 win over the Aggies in Friday night’s opener. He doubled to lead off the sixth ahead of a three-run Ryan Angel home run that turned a 4-2 deficit into a 5-4 edge.
 
He followed with another 2-for-4 effort with two runs scored in Saturday night’s 10-5 victory, this time knocking in a pair of runs and also walking twice and handling 13 defensive chances cleanly. He stole his 11th base and first since April 10.
 
In a 12-5 win to complete the sweep on Sunday afternoon, McKimmy was 3-for-4 with two doubles, two walks, three runs scored and three runs batted in. His doubles gave him three for the series, 13 for the season and 10 in WAC play, matching a single-game personal high. After walking each of his first two times up to lead off the first and second innings, scoring in the first, McKimmy had RBI doubles in the fourth and sixth frames, scoring both times, and an RBI single in the seventh. He was finally retired on a strikeout in the ninth inning.
 
For the week, McKimmy batted .500 and added seven runs to his team-leading total, giving him an even 50 now on the year. He had three doubles, slugging .714, walked five times, drove in five and stole one base on one attempt. McKimmy was 7-for-12 (.583) at the plate with a .833 slugging percentage against New Mexico State.
