Student-Athlete of the Week - May 31, 2007

Ryan Angel

Name: Ryan Angel
Sport: Baseball
Year: Senior
Position: First Base

Ryan Angel has been named the Spartan Foundation Athlete of the Week.

Angel, a fourth-year senior out of Rocklin, Calif., and Rocklin High School, was competing in his second and final WAC Tournament. He was named to the 2007 Western Athletic Conference All-Tournament team at first base.

Angel led all players in both batting average and in hits over the duration of the four-day event. He batted .556 with 10 hits in 18 at-bats, producing a pair of four-hit games to match his career best, against Louisiana Tech in the Spartans’ tournament opener on Thursday, May 24, and against Nevada in his final appearance in a Spartan uniform on Saturday night, May 26. Angel was second in the tourney with 16 total bases, tied for second with three others, including freshman teammate Kyle Bellows, with two home runs, and tied for third with five runs scored.

Angel led fourth-seeded San Jose State to an 11-1 defeat of third-seeded Louisiana Tech on the tournament's first day, going 4-for-5 with a two-run home run, three runs scored and three RBI. He then went 2-for-4 with a stolen base in a 5-1 win over host Nevada on Friday night, May 25. Following a 6-2 loss to top seed and eventual champion Fresno State on Saturday afternoon, May 26, Angel was 4-for-5 with his team-leading eighth home run of 2007, two runs scored and one RBI in an 11-9 loss to Nevada in an elimination game that same night. His home run was a solo shot with one out in the ninth to move the Spartans to within three at 11-8. It would prove to be his final collegiate at-bat, as Angel fell one hit shy of former teammate and current San Francisco Giant Kevin Frandsen's all-time school hits mark of 246. He ends his Spartan career first on the all-time chart in doubles (55) and at-bats (796), second in hits (245) and tied for second in games played (214).
