Student-Athlete of the Week - October 15, 2007

Brie Markenke

Name: Kristal Tsukano
Sport: Women's Volleyball
Year: Sophmore
Position: Libero

Kristal Tsukano has been named the Spartan Foundation Athlete of the Week after her performances last week for the volleyball team.

Against Idaho on Thursday, Tsukano, a sophomore libero from Honolulu, became only the second player in school history to record 40 or more digs in a match. She finished the five-game match with 42 digs for San Jose State and is only the second person in school history to record 40 or more digs in a match. Former Spartan Jessie Shull did it twice with a school-record 47 against UC Santa Barbara last season and 42 against Fresno State in 2004. Tsukano’s 42 digs is also the highest dig total by a WAC player this season.

In a three-game win at Boise State Saturday evening, Tsukano tied for the team-high in digs with 13 and added three assists in the match.

For the week, she averaged 6.88 digs per game.

The San Jose State volleyball team continues on the road this week at Louisiana Tech on Thursday, and at #18 New Mexico State on Saturday.
