Student-Athlete of the Week - October 16, 2006
Marissa Dayton
Name: Marissa Dayton
Sport: Women's Soccer
Year: Redshirt Freshman
Position: GK
Dayton posted two shutouts last week to extend her string to four straight games and 381 minutes of scoreless soccer in goal for the Spartans. The Livermore, Calif. native led San Jose State to a double-overtime tie against Utah State and a 5-0 win over Louisiana Tech.
The four shutouts in a row is a new team and individual school record and already puts Dayton in third-place on the Spartans' career shutouts list in her first season of action after redshirting in 2005.
Dayton made a career-high 13 saves in the scoreless double-overtime tie with Utah State in San Jose State's first-ever trip to Logan, Utah. She stopped six shots in each half and added a 13th save in the first overtime period. Dayton added a pair of saves in the first half in a 5-0 home victory over Louisiana Tech.
Dayton's previous career-high in saves was nine, which she has registered twice earlier this season on the road at LMU and at third-ranked Santa Clara. The 13 saves against Utah State were three short of the single-game school record.
Dayton joins teammate Nicole Irwin as Spartan women's soccer players who have earned Spartan Foundation Student-Athlete of the Week honors in 2006.
