Student-Athlete of the Week - October 8, 2007
Brie Markenke
Name: Brie Marhenke
Sport: Women's Swimming
Year: Senior
Events: Free, Fly
Marhenke, who redshirted the 2006-07 season after earning two individual gold medals at the 2006 Western Athletic Conference Championship and a trip to the NCAA Championships, sprinted 23.58 to win the 50 freestyle by over a full second in her first competitive race as a Spartan since the 2006 NCAA Championships. The mark fell narrowly short of the NCAA 'B' standard of 23.29. Following a break, she timed 52.07 in winning the 100 freestyle. Marhenke holds school records in both events at 22.54 and 50.30, respectively.
The two-time team captain also swam the third leg of the 200 freestyle 'A' relay to conclude the meet, with a split of 23.54. Her foursome was credited as the event winner, though Stanford's 'B' relay timed 1:37.18 after the Cardinal had decided to exhibition the event with a comfortable lead. The Spartan 'A' would have placed second normally.
Marhenke had previously swept the sprint freestyle events against the then-third-ranked Cardinal in her first race as a Spartan to open the 2005-06 season on October 14, 2005.
