Student-Athlete of the Week - September 29, 2008

Jared Strubeck

Name: Jared Strubeck
Sport: Football
Year: Senior
Position: Kicker

Jared Strubeck has been named the Spartan Foundation Student-Athlete of the Week for his performance in leading the San Jose State football team to a 20-17 victory over Hawai'i late Saturday evening. The win ended a seven-game losing streak to Hawai'i, and was the Spartans' first inside Aloha Stadium since 2000.

Strubeck hit the game-winning field goal with 1:49 remaining in the fourth quarter to give San Jose State the victory. With 9:32 left in the game, he hit a career-long 50-yard field goal to tie the score at 17. The 50-yarder was the first San Jose State field goal of that length since 1995.

Two possessions later, a 47-yard conversion was his first game-winner in his three-plus seasons as a Spartan.

Strubeck’s game-winner was set up by a Duke Ihenacho interception at the UH 35-yard line. San Jose State was unable to get a first down, but Strubeck answered the call with 1:49 remaining, nailing the 47-yarder through when given the second chance.

With his eight points scored in the game, Strubeck is now fourth all-time in Spartan scoring with 200 points. At UH, he passed tailback Sheldon Canley, who scored 192 points from 1988-90.

For his efforts against UH, Strubeck has also been named the Western Athletic Conference Special Teams Player of the Week.

The Spartan football team is now 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the WAC. San Jose State is off this week and returns to action on Saturday, October 11, with the Homecoming game against Utah State (4:30 p.m., ESPNU).
