There Is No "I" In Intensity
Eighth in a series; featuring true heroes of the Spartan Foundation Annual Scholarship Fund Drive
Okay...actually, there are two “I’s” in INTENSITY...and they both belong to RIck McCliman!
We’ve all seen the faces on Mt. Rushmore. But, have you ever seen the face of a human volcano? If not; just question Rick McCliman (BA ’64, Humanities & Arts) about teachers’ salaries, redistricting, a ref’s “non-call” on obvious holding, CSU policies and procedures, who’s not on the Spartan Stadium Ring of Honor, or a host of other subjects. Do that and you’ve tapped the intellectual magma chamber of the passionate cauldron that is Rick McCliman. Now, picture a man with total focus, lips pursed, a penetrating gaze, neck veins pulsing, scarlet hues spreading upward, head slightly cocked and leaning in toward you. Yep. You’re about to experience an explosion of McClimanamania.
Interesting that for a man with such an extensive vocabulary, the words “shy”, “restrained” and “demure” don’t appear. Then again, look up “intensity”, “dedication” or “passion” and you’ll see his face. An avid Spartan booster, Rick wears his heart on his blue and gold sleeve...and has been known to voice his opinion during the course of athletic events. If you’re wondering about that; just ask any WAC baseball umpire, basketball ref, or football official. Believe us; they ALL know whose two “I’s” are boring holes in their zebra stripes!
To our great benefit, Rick focuses his intensity, dedication, and passion on the betterment of Spartan Athletics as a team captain for the Annual Scholarship Fund Drive. And to the great surprise of no one, Rick is the perennial winner of the “Dedicated Drive Worker” award. He also added the “Quirky Team Name” trophy to his mantle this year. Mixed among “Gold Raiders”, “Golden Blues”, and “True Blue Spartans”, you have Rick McCliman’s “Hoplites”. Be honest; how many of you can tell us what a “Hoplite” is...without doing a Google search? (Citizen-soldiers of the ancient Greek city-states...yeah, okay...we looked it up.)
Now, if we could only find a volcano in Scotland, we’d tell the rock sculptors to get busy; because we know whose face should be carved there! Mt. McCliman...is that smoke curling out the top?
