Three Spartan Athletic Staff Members Receive Promotions

Three members of the Spartan Athletics Department received promotions for their hard work and dedication to the "Culture of Champions."

San JoseThree San Jose State Athletic staff members received promotions from Athletics Director Tom Bowen for their hard work and dedication to the department. Darren Coelho has been named an Assistant Athletics Director for Ticket Operations, while Matt Witty has taken on the responsibility of Assistant Athletics Director for Business and Finance. Ken McDonald has been promoted to Associate Athletics Director for Advancement.

Coelho has spent the past seven years as the Director of Ticketing for the Spartan Athletic Department. He oversees the ticketing of nine Spartan sports and the compliance of all university athletic admissions by following all NCAA and Western Athletic Conference guidelines. While at San Jose State, Coelho was the Ticket Manager for the Silicon Valley Football Classic games from 2001-04, and the San Jose State ticket liaison for the 2007 NCAA Men’s Basketball West Regional at HP Pavilion. A graduate of San Jose State, he is an active member of the International Ticketing Association and the Bay Area Professional Ticketing Association. Prior to his appointment at San Jose State in 2001, Coelho spent over four years as the Ticket Manger for the San Jose SaberCats of the Arena Football League.

Witty was the Athletic Business Manager for the past two years before his promotion. He oversees all business operations for the Athletic Department, has oversight for Equipment Services and serves as the sport supervisor for women’s soccer. Witty first came to San Jose State in 2001, working in the business office. He was then promoted to Assistant Ticket Manger in June 2002 and stay in that position until April 2004. After working at the Marshall University and University of Wisconsin ticket offices, Witty returned to the Spartan Ticket Office in 2005 and moved to the business office in June of 2006. He earned an undergraduate degree from Ball State University and a master’s degree from Marshall University. Witty is a member of the Collegiate Athletic Business Management Association and the National Association of College Athletics Directors.

McDonald has been a member of the San Jose State Athletics Department since 2005 and is the Executive Director of the Spartan Foundation. He began his Spartan career as an Assistant Athletics Director for corporate sales. In 2006, his focus shifted to the Spartan Foundation, the fund raising arm for San Jose State student-athlete scholarships. Volunteer workers under his leadership raised an unprecedented $2.8-million plus over the last two years for the university’s 400-plus student-athlete population. Prior to his arrival at San Jose State, McDonald was a very successful revenue generator in the private sector. He received an undergraduate degree from Stanford University and a master’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley.
