Tom Bowen Repeats On Bay Area Power List

San Jose, Calif.-----Athletics director Tom Bowen is one of 19 Bay Area executives named to the San Jose Mercury News' Top-25 most powerful sports personalities for the second year in a row.

San Jose, Calif.-----For the second year in a row, San Jose State University director of athletics Tom Bowen is one of the Bay Area's Top-25 most powerful sports personalities for 2009 according to San Jose Mercury News columnist Mark Purdy.

More than halfway through his fifth year at San Jose State, Bowen is the only Spartan athletics director ever to be named to the Mercury News' list of key sports figures in one of the most saturated sports marketplaces in the United States. The Bay Area is the home to two Major League Baseball, a pair of National Football League, one National Basketball Association and one National Hockey League teams; six major universities that sponsor NCAA Division I athletics programs, three of which play in the Football Bowl Subdivision - the highest level of college football; two Division I conference office headquarters and numerous other amateur and professional sports interests vying for consumer time, attention and participation.

The San Jose State director of athletics is one of the 19 sports personalities named to the Mercury News list in 2008 and 2009.

Nationally, Bowen is one of eight Football Bowl Subdivision athletics directors on the NCAA Division I Football Issues Committee and is one of 12 named to serve as a mentor to aspiring women and ethnic minority athletics administrators in the NCAA Fellows Leadership Program.
