Washington picked up its fourth team championship of the 2001-02 season and set a Western Intercollegiate team scoring record in the process with an 834 total on the par 70, 6,445-yard Pasatiempo Golf Course. The previous record was 838 set by the 2000 Fresno State team.
"The real key is everyone on our team has played this course before. We played it aggressively and we expect success," said Huskies’ coach Matt Thurmond. "Pasatiempo is a course where you can find ways to make double and triple bogeys, but there are ways to make birdies and we chose to find a way to make birdies."
All five Washington golfers finished in the top-25 in the field of 88 players. Robbins, who was the Huskies’ number-four player in the five-man lineup, was the only player in the field to shoot under par during each of the three rounds. His 202 final score was six shots better than teammate Brock McKenzie and Kansas’ Chris Marshall.
Peter Tomasulo of California was fourth at 209 and Nick Watney of Fresno State was fifth at even par 210.
Isaac Weintraub of San Jose State, who led Robbins and the rest of the field by one stroke after 36 holes, shot a final round 78 and finished tied for sixth at one-over par 211.
Fresno State finished second in the team standings with an 854 total, 20 strokes behind Washington. San Jose State at 856, Kansas at 865 and UC Irvine at 866 rounded out the top five teams.
Other local teams included California, eighth at 869; Stanford, 14th at 891 and Santa Clara, 16th at 903.
