Despite a disappointing fourth season on the playing field, Whitaker finished his college career as one of the top-40 NCAA Division I-A all purpose running backs. He set 17 San Jose State records and a pair of Western Athletic Conference and NCAA records during his four years at San Jose State. The 2001 San Jose State graduate is the first member of his immediate family to earn a college degree.
Fe’esago, the school’s first lineman to be mentioned as a candidate for the Outland Trophy and Lombardi Award, also is the first San Jose State player to be named first-team All-Western Athletic Conference twice. The stalwart offensive lineman who started at left guard and left tackle in 2001, was a first-team selection in 2000 and 2001.
Thirty-five San Jose State players and five coaches have participated in previous East-West Shrine Games. The 2002 game marks just the seventh time two or more Spartans are playing for the West team in the same game.
