Sparks, Nev.-----Three golfers in the top-10 helped San Jose State University to a second place start after 18 holes of the 2002 Western Athletic Conference women's golf championships.

The Spartans posted a first-day total of 299 on the par 72, 6,089-yard Red Hawk Golf Course. Defending champion Tulsa, did one better than San Jose State in round with four of its five players shooting par or better for a four-under par 284 score.

None of the other five teams in the field had a team score below 300 Monday. Host Nevada is third at 309 followed by UTEP at 312; Boise State at 314; SMU at 315; and Hawaii at 324.

Stacy Prammanasudh of Tulsa, the defending individual champion, is the tournament leader with an opening round 69. She has a two-stroke lead over teammate Dani Mallon, the only other player under par with a 71. Tulsa’s Maiko Senda and Suzie Fisher are tied for third at even par 72.

San Jose State’s Helle Gram needed three birdies en route to a one-over par 73 and fifth place among the 35 golfers in the field. Marcela Leon, sixth with a 74, and Ashley Gomes, tied for seventh with a 75, also are in the top 10.

Second round action is set for Tuesday. The 54-hole tournament concludes Wednesday.
