Indianapolis, Ind.-----San Jose State University is one of 21 teams invited to participate in the 2002 NCAA Women’s Golf West Regional Championships, May 9-11, at the Stanford University Golf Course on the Stanford University campus.

The Spartans hope to finish in the top eight at the regional championship played over 54 holes on the par 72, 6,168-yard course. These eight teams will advance to the NCAA Championships, May 21-24, at the Washington National Golf Club in Auburn, Washington.

San Jose State, ranked 40th nationally in the April 30 GolfStat poll, will rely on its team of three seniors, Marcela Leon, Helle Gram and Rebecka Heinmert, sophomore Ashley Gomes and freshman Nicole Deacon to earn the program’s fourth consecutive NCAA Championship berth since Nancy Lewis took over as the director of golf.

Teams in GolfStat’s top-50 include Arizona State (8), Arizona (12), Southern California (13), UCLA (14), California (19), Washington (20), Pepperdine (21), Stanford (22), New Mexico (24), New Mexico State (28), USF (42), Idaho (45) and Brigham Young (49). UC Irvine (54), Colorado State (55), Denver (64), Campbell (72), Washington State (80), Oral Roberts (91) and Northern Arizona (95) complete the 21-team field.

Competition begins each day at 7:30 a.m. San Jose State is paired with UC Irvine and Denver for the first two rounds of competition. The Spartans have tee times starting at 11:50 a.m. through 12:30 p.m. off the first tee on Thursday, May 9, and 7:30 a.m. through 8:20 a.m. off the tenth tee on Friday, May 10. Pairings for the final round on Saturday, May 11, will be based on the 36-hole scores. The top 12 teams will tee off in the morning wave and the remaining nine teams will be in the afternoon wave.
