Stanford, Calif.-----Unable to mount a final-round rally, San Jose State University finished tied for 11th at the NCAA Division I West Regional Women’s Golf Championships.

The 11th place finish signals an end to the 2001-02 season for the Spartans. San Jose State shot a final round 303 for a 921 total on the Stanford University Golf Course. The top eight West Regional finishers are advancing to the NCAA Championships in Auburn, Wash., May 21-24. Southern California was the eighth-place team with a 908 total.

“It was a decent final round for the team. We shot what we averaged for the season (in the tournament). You can’t ask much more,” said San Jose State University director of golf Nancy Lewis, whose team had to make up 10 strokes and pass eight teams over the final 36 holes for a return trip to the NCAA Championships. “We were in too big a hole after the first day.”

Marcela Leon posted her second straight 73 and Helle Gram added a two-over 74 to lead the Spartans in the final round. Leon, with five birdies, and Gram, with three, were the only San Jose State players with a birdie the final 18 holes. The Spartans also counted a pair of 78’s from Rebecka Heinmert and Ashley Gomes.

Pepperdine and UCLA tied for first place at 883. California, at 889, Arizona at 890, Stanford at 901, Arizona State and Washington at 904 and Southern California at 908 were the West Regional qualifying teams for the NCAA Championships.

Gram was the top San Jose State finisher tying for 29th place at 227.
