Women's Swimming Coach Pablo Morales & Former Football Great Billy Wilson Inducted into the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame
San Francisco, Calif.-- Three-time Olympic Games gold medal winner Pablo Morales, the current San Jose State University women's swimming coach, and six-time National Football League Pro Bowl selection Billy Wilson were two of the four 2000 inductees into the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame.
Morales, who competed for Stanford University and set an NCAA record with 11 first-place finishes during his college career, won gold medals in the 1984 and 1992 Olympics. He was captain of the 1992 U.S. Olympic swimming team and won the gold medal in the 100 meter butterfly. After serving as an assistant coach for the Stanford University men's swimming team, he was named head coach of the San Jose State women's team in 1998. This season, he directed the Spartans to a fifth place finish at the Western Athletic Conference Championships and was named the "Coach of the Year" in a vote by the conference coaches.
Wilson was a member of the 1948 through 1950 San Jose State football teams. He went to play 10 seasons with the San Francisco 49ers. He led the NFL in pass receptions in 1954, 1956 and 1957 and was the "Most Valuable Player" of the 1957 Pro Bowl. He caught 407 passes for 5,902 yards and 49 touchdowns as a professional and his team records stood for 25 years. After retiring as a player, he worked for the San Francisco 49ers as an assistant coach and team scout.
Besides Morales and Wilson, 1989 World Series "Most Valuable Player" Dave Stewart of the Oakland A's and five-time Pro Bowl quarterback Ken Stabler of the Oakland Raiders were also inducted into the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame.
The addition of Morales and Wilson brings the number of Hall of Fame members with San Jose State University connections to eight of the 97 members. Plaques for enshrinees can be seen in the United Airlines terminal at San Francisco International Airport.
