Women's tennis beats Saint Mary's, 5-2
Moraga, Calif.-----The San Jose State University women's tennis team completed its regular season with a 5-2 victory over Saint Mary's College in a non-conference match.
| Helen Van won her final regular season singles match of her career to help the Spartans beat Saint Mary's. |
The Spartan victory raised the team’s record to 7-14 and avenged an earlier 5-2 loss to the Gaels. Saint Mary’s now is 9-11 on the season.
San Jose State gained the win taking four out of six singles and two of three doubles contests to earn the doubles point. Freshman Noelle Lee raised her singles record to 21-8 with a 6-1, 6-0 straight set victory over Valerie Verrier at number-one singles.
The Spartans also received a boost by the return of Anna Nordell, who played and won her first contest in dual match competition this season. Nordell, who played regularly at number-one singles in 2001, topped Shannon Aloia, 6-2, 6-2.
The Spartans return to action next week at the Western Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Championships in Tulsa, Okla.
