Football Concludes 2nd Week With Crisp 63-Play Scrimmage

Aug. 11, 2018

The first San Jose State University fall preseason football scrimmage featured a pair of touchdowns by the offense and interceptions by a pair of freshmen on defense.

The offense seemed to have the upper hand early as quarterback Montel Aaron and wide receiver Thai Cottrell connected on a 34-yard touchdown pass, the longest pass play of the 63-play scrimmage and running back Malike Roberson barreled his way in from 3 yards for what turned out to be the final touchdown of the afternoon.

Roberson was the day's leading rusher with seven carries for 64 yards. A 43-yard run on his third carry turned out to be the offense's longest play of the day.

Cornerback Johnny Balderas, a redshirt freshman, and safety Tre Jenkins, a member of the 2018 recruiting class, came up with interceptions for the defense that also finished the afternoon with five quarterback sacks.

"The best part (of the scrimmage) was we had so many fans come out and watch. We had people everywhere. It's really neat for the players to get that kind of support from the community, from their friends and family. That was outstanding," said San Jose State head coach Brent Brennan.

"Early on, the offense moved the ball pretty good. It seemed like the defense settled in, came up with a couple of turnovers and did a nice job of stopping the run at the end of the scrimmage.

"I think it's a good sign when you trade punches on offense and defense."

The Spartans return to the practice field Monday, August 13, at 9:45 a.m. and will have daily practices through Friday, August 17. The team's final scrimmage of the fall is Saturday, August 18, at 5:30 p.m. inside CEFCU Stadium.
