Tampa, Fla.—The San José State volleyball team opened the 2018 with a pair of matches at the USF Invitational. The Spartans lost to host South Florida, 3-1 (25-19, 17-25, 25-17, 25-17) and Stony Brook, 3-1 (25-21, 25-20, 26-24) on Friday.
Against the Bulls, Latahevai Lousi and Fernanda Vido each recorded 12 kills to lead the team. Lousi hit .429 for the match (12-3-21) and had the team's only solo block. Laura Parts and Fernanda Vido teamed up to record two blocks. Luiza Andrade led the team with 12 digs and three service aces.
The Spartans hit just .108 for the match (42-29-12) and recorded 10 service errors. The team's best hitting set of the match came in the 25-17 win as the team hit .348 with 10 kills on 23 attempts and only two errors.
In the second match of the day, freshman Haylee Nelson led the Spartans with 11 kills and five blocks. Freshman setter Mamie Garard recorded 28 assists eight digs and five blocks (one solo, four assists) in her second match in a Spartan uniform. Andrade again led the team with 14 digs and two service aces.
San José State plays one more match in Tampa - Saturday against Jacksonville at 11 a.m. ET/8 a.m. PT, before returning home for next week's Blue/Gold exhibition on Saturday, September 1, at 2 p.m., inside Spartan Gym.
