Spartans Fall To CSUN, 1-0, In 2018 Home Opener

SAN JOSE, Calif. - San Jose State men's soccer dropper their home opener to CSUN on Sunday, falling 1-0 to the Matadors in a hotly contested match at Spartan Soccer Field.

SJSU attempted eight shots in the opening half with two on-goal and tallied 10 shots for the match. CSUN attempted eight shots total, six of which coming in the second frame. Spartans' goalkeeper Alex Clewis, coming off a career-high 11-save performance at Stanford, made a trio of saves in the second half.

After a scoreless opening half, CSUN (1-1-0) struck first for the game's lone goal in the 71st minute as Khalid Hunter headed in a cross from the top of the box from Wolfgang Prentice. The Spartans' defense locked down the Matadors for the remainder of the match, however they were unable to find the net themselves.

Penalties were aplenty as the teams combined for 31 fouls (16 - SJSU, 15 -CSUN) and a total of 10 yellow cards were handed out.

The Spartans (0-1-1) will return to action this weekend with road stops at UC Davis on Friday and Sacramento State on Sunday. Friday's opening kick is slated for 2:30 p.m. from Davis, Calif.
