Denver, Colo.----- San Jose State University goalkeeper Alex Clewis was named the Western Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for games played through August 26.
The senior from Concord, Calif., was credited with a personal single-match career-high 11 saves in the 0-0 overtime tie against three-time NCAA defending champion Stanford in the season opener for both teams on August 24. The 11 saves were the most by a San Jose State goalkeeper in a game since current Spartan assistant coach Jonathan Lester was credited with 12 saves in a 2010 scoreless tie against New Mexico.
For Clewis, a transfer from Notre Dame de Namur University, it was his second career shutout as a Spartan.
"It was well deserved, especially playing the three-time defending champions. He came up with some saves that kept us in the (Stanford) game. It was one of our better goalkeeping displays over the last few years," said San Jose State men's soccer head coach Simon Tobin.
Clewis concluded his weekend making three saves in a 1-0 non-conference loss to CSUN on August 26. The Matadors scored the match's only goal in the 72nd minute.
San Jose State returns to action, Friday, August 31, against UC Davis in a non-conference match in Davis. Match time is 2:30 p.m. (PT).
