San Francisco, Calif. – Led by Jennifer Sandoval and Kai Bohannon, the San José State women's cross country team finished fifth in the 26th USF Cross Country Invitational, the opening race of the 2018 season. SJSU totaled 102 point over the 6k course in Golden Gate Park.
Sandoval, a junior from Fontana, Calif., was the first Spartan to cross the line. In a time of 21:18.0, less than a second behind the three runners ahead of her, Sandoval finished in fourth place. It was her best finish in three times competing in this event and for the 13th time in as many races in her college career, she was the first Spartan to cross the finish line.
Sophomore Kai Bohannon was 10 seconds behind Sandoval and finished in sixth place in 21:28.9. It is the best finish in her college career and sliced more than a minute off her finish time from this event last season.
Camilla Hanson, a native of Fresno, Calif., set personal bests for finishing position and time in a 6k event. She crossed the line in 23rd place and in a time of 22:29.6.
In 28th place, Carmen Contreras ran a 22:45.8. Her time was more than 30 seconds quicker than the senior ran in last year's USF Cross Country invitational and her 28th place finish is the second highest of her major college career.
Rounding out the scoring was junior Briana Valencia. The 2017 California Community College Athletics Association All-State honoree, out of Oxnard College, crossed the line in 23:19.6 and in 41st place.
