Boca Raton, Fla.—The San José State volleyball team traveled back to Florida for the Owls Classic this weekend and lost a pair of matches on Friday. The team opened the day with a tough match against North Florida, losing 3-2 (29-27, 25-20, 27-25, 16-25, 15-10). The team then closed the night facing host Florida Atlantic and were swept 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-19).
North Florida 3, San José State 2
•Fernanda Vido led the Spartans in kills with a season-best 23. She also had seven digs and two blocks.
•Haylee Nelson recorded a team-best six block assists and had five kills.
•Mamie Garard had her first collegiate double-double with 34 assists and 13 digs.
•Luiza Andrade recorded season-bests of 24 digs, nine assists and four service aces.
•The Spartans had at least two leads in every set of the match. Final lead of the match was 5-4 in the fifth set.
•In the first set, San José State had three set points, winning the set 29-27 on a block by Nelson and Ryann Thomison.
•North Florida used a 5-0 run to win the second set 25-20.
•The Ospreys needed three sets points before winning 27-25 in set three.
•The Spartans took the lead for good in the fourth set at 8-7 and had a 17-9 run to win 25-16.
Florida Atlantic 3, San José State 0
•Fernanda Vido led the team with 10 kills. Caitlin Bettenay added eight kills, while Thaliana Grajeda had seven kills.
•Mamie Garard had 26 assists and five digs.
•Luiza Andrade led the team with 13 digs.
•The Spartans did not have a lead in the match until the third set and led by as many as three points at 13-10 and 14-11. The team was outscored 14-5 by the Owls to end the set.
San José State is now 4-4 on the season and finishes play at the Owls Classic Saturday morning with a match against South Dakota State beginning at 10 a.m. ET/7 a.m. PT.
