Volleyball Sweeps Jackrabbits At Owls Classic

Boca Raton, Fla.— Spartan Fernanda Vido led the team in kills for the third consecutive match and recorded her second double-double of the season to lead the San José State volleyball team to a 3-0 victory over South Dakota State Saturday morning at the Owls Classic hosted by Florida Atlantic.
 
Vido hit .324 for the match as she recorded a team-high 16 kills in the win. She was second on the team in digs with 10 for her double-double.
 
Luiza Andrade led the team with 12 digs and added three assists in the match.
 
For their efforts this weekend, Vido and Andrade were named to the Owls Classic All-Tournament team. Vido averaged 4.45 kills and 2.18 digs per set, while Andrade averaged 4.45 digs, 1.27 assists and 0.36 aces per set.
 
Others contributing to the win included Caitlin Bettenay with 10 kills and eight digs. Haylee Nelson had seven kills and a team-best five blocks, while Thaliana Grajeda hit .625 with five kills and three blocks. Whitney Nelson had four kills, four blocks and three digs. Mamie Garard recorded 20 assists and seven digs, while Kaitlyn Zdroik had 15 assists, a team-best three service aces and four digs.
 
The Spartans and Jackrabbits traded the lead in all three sets of the match. In the first set, SJSU used an 8-3 run to close out the set to win 25-20. The teams were tied at 17-17, and SDSU had a 19-17 lead before the Spartans closed out the set.
 
The two teams battled to start the second set before the Spartans took the lead for good at 11-10 did not look back. The third set was similar to the second with San José State took the lead at 12-11 on a Ryann Thomison kill. SJSU had three set points before Vido recorded her 16th kill for the win.
 
The Spartans are now 5-4 on the season as the team heads into the Mountain West portion of the schedule. The team opens the schedule at home on Thursday, September 20, against Wyoming. First serve is set for 6 p.m. inside Spartan Gym, located on the corner of Fourth and San Carlos Streets. Admission is $8 for adults and $5 for children 12 and younger.
