Sacramento, Calif.---- Sophomore Omar Lemus scored his first two major college goals in a 3-minute, 16-second span late in the first half leading San Jose State to a 2-1 over Sacramento State in a men's soccer non-conference match.

Lemus opened the scoring for the Spartans (1-2-1) at the 35:40 mark taking a pass from teammate Andrew Mendoza in traffic and placed his shot in the top right corner of the goal past Hornets goalkeeper Ryan Curtis.

In San Jose State's first win of the season, Lemus added his second goal of the first half at 38:56 taking a long pass from Joseph Kay along the left side, worked his way back to the middle of the field through the Sacramento State defense and beat a surprised Curtis for a 2-0 Spartan lead.

"It was good to get a win. Sacramento (State) is very good this year. This road trip, Davis and Sacramento is a tough one. I've done this for many times. I told the boys before we left to get one win out of two would be pretty good. Today, we knew we had to respond. There was no other alternative after Friday's result," said San Jose State head coach Simon Tobin.

Sacramento State (1-2-1) scored the only goal of the second half on a penalty shot by Dominic Scotti in the 61st minute.

"We came out and played the first half exactly like we wanted to. We were in complete control the whole half… When they got back to 2-1, we lost a little bit of our focus, but we did enough to get the win," said the Spartans coach whose team avoided losing a 2-0 halftime lead like it did two days earlier in a 3-2 loss at UC Davis.

San Jose State goalkeeper Alex Clewis picked up his first win of the season making two saves. Curtis was credited with three saves.

The Spartans return to action, Thursday, September 6, at Saint Mary's in a non-conference contest. Match time is 4:00 p.m.
