Las Vegas, Nev.----- Freshman Alba Pedrero Galindo and the doubles team of Savannah Sendar and Miyo Kobayashi were winners for San Jose State University on the first day of the three-day UNLV Women's Tennis Fall Invitational.
Pedrero Galindo defeated Adrianna Sosbowska, 6-4, 7-6, in her major college debut.
Kobayashi and Sendar teamed up to defeat the Southern Utah pair of Ghita Nassik and Jana Weiss, 8-5.
"I'm very happy for Alba getting her first singles win. She played a very tough second set tiebreak to get the win," said San Jose State head coach Chad Skorupka. "I'm sure she was happy she didn't have to play three sets since it was very hot.
"Miyo (Kobayashi) and Savannah (Sendar) played and were all business winning their match."
The Spartans other two doubles pairs of Tamara Culibrk and Mathilda Vidgren and Kristina Baran and Pedrero Galindo lost their first-round matches.
Other than Pedrero Galindo's victory, San Jose State had a rough day in singles action. Kobayashi was the only Spartan to go three sets in a 6-7, 6-4, 7-6 loss to Lalita Devarakonda of Long Beach State. Vidgren, Culibrk and Sendar lost in straight sets.
"This team as a whole needs to compete much harder than it did today. We will have plenty of opportunities to turn our play around tomorrow," added the Spartans' head coach. "If we compete harder, we will have some more positive results."
The five-team tournament includes Long Beach State, Northern Arizona, Southern Utah and host UNLV. Play resumes on Saturday, July 22, 10:00 a.m. and concludes on Sunday, July 23, starting at 10:00 a.m.
